How to Measure Your Cat for a Harness

Before choosing a cat harness, measure your cat’s neck and chest, then compare both measurements with the harness’s adjustable range. Weight alone cannot tell you whether the neck opening and chest strap will fit. Two cats of similar weight may need different adjustments.

A size chart is your starting point. You will still need to check the actual fit indoors, follow the instructions for that design, and give your cat time to get comfortable. No harness is escape-proof, and outdoor walks are not the right choice for every cat.

Start with a calm cat and a soft tape measure

Use a flexible measuring tape marked in centimeters or inches, and keep a note of your readings. Choose a quiet time when your cat is comfortable being touched. If your cat is pulling away or becoming upset, stop and try another time rather than holding them down to finish.

Let your cat stand naturally if they are comfortable doing so. Keep the tape flat against the coat without pulling it tight. Take each measurement again to check that you have not accidentally twisted the tape or measured a different spot. Write down the measurement and its unit together.

Measure the neck and chest separately

For the neck, follow the selected harness’s sizing diagram to locate the intended neck section. A collar measurement may not describe where a particular harness sits. If the product does not show that location clearly, ask for a fitting illustration before ordering.

For the chest, measure around the fullest part of the rib cage behind the front legs, following the product’s measurement guidance. Keep the tape level rather than slanting toward the belly. Record the measurement without guessing extra allowance; use the product-specific fitting instructions when adjusting the harness itself.

If you measure in inches and the chart uses centimeters, multiply inches by 2.54. For centimeters to inches, divide by 2.54. For example, a 14-inch chest measures 35.56 cm. Keep your original reading when comparing it with a size limit: rounded display values can hide a small difference near the edge of a range.

Read the whole size chart

Both the neck and chest must be compatible with the chosen design. A chest measurement that falls within the chart does not make up for a neck measurement outside it. If either measurement is at the limit, or you cannot tell how the harness should sit, ask for help rather than assuming the adjustment will work.

Some product pages also list a harness back section. For the CloudSoft and Adjustable Rope sets below, that is the harness connection section, not the length of your cat’s back from neck to tail. Do not use it as a substitute for the neck or chest measurement.

Compare the three LoafyPaws sets

Each of these sets includes a harness and a matching leash. The figures below are published specifications, not results from an independent fit test. Inch equivalents are rounded to one decimal place.

Harness Neck range Chest range
CloudSoft 10–33 cm / 3.9–13.0 in 31–53 cm / 12.2–20.9 in
Adjustable Rope 21–33 cm / 8.3–13.0 in 31–53 cm / 12.2–20.9 in
TrailFree 21–31 cm / 8.3–12.2 in 32–53 cm / 12.6–20.9 in

Choose by confirmed fit first, then compare the surface, adjustment system, leash length, and care instructions. These specifications do not establish which design your cat will prefer or which is harder to slip out of. A longer leash also does not mean you should use its full length in every setting.

Check the fit indoors before considering a walk

Read the instructions for the exact harness before putting it on. Check the straps or rope, seams, buckles, adjustment points, and leash clip for damage. Once fitted, watch your cat move in a quiet, enclosed indoor space. The harness should not restrict normal movement or breathing, and the straps should not be twisted.

Some fitting instructions use a finger-space check. Finger size, strap design, and a cat’s build vary, so that check alone cannot confirm a secure fit. Follow the particular harness’s guidance and ask for help if the placement or adjustment is unclear. Do not pull hard on the leash to test whether your cat can escape. Stop if the harness shifts out of position or your cat becomes distressed.

Introduce wearing gradually

Toronto Humane Society recommends a gradual introduction, indoor practice, and adding the leash after the cat is comfortable with the harness. Use rewards your cat enjoys, keep sessions manageable, and let their response guide the pace. Do not expect a cat to walk like a dog or to finish training on a fixed schedule.

Only consider a quiet outdoor setting after comfortable indoor practice. Watch for tension, flattened ears, or other signs of fear, and stop rather than pushing on. The Society’s harness-training guide provides more detail: Toronto Humane Society’s harness-training guide (accessed 2 November 2026)

Keep every outing supervised. The LoafyPaws product instructions advise against leaving a cat tethered or unattended. If your cat consistently dislikes wearing a harness, choose an indoor activity they enjoy instead.

Keep care instructions with the right set

Keep the care instructions for the exact set you buy. Do not assume a cleaning method suitable for one set applies to another. If the label and listing disagree, ask for clarification before washing or soaking the harness or leash.

Recheck the fit and condition before each use. If your cat’s measurements change, measure again. A suitable harness should be chosen with current measurements and a careful indoor fit check, not a weight estimate or a promise that one size works for every cat.
